Show Title: Looking Up
This series of drawings began when I photographed a skylight in my house, and the printed photo grabbed my attention. I was intrigued by the darkness and the light.
I tried the image in several mediums until I found what I was looking for - wood. I loved seeing the wood grain come through the graphite, and added a little bit of pastel to deepen the dimension of the windows. As the series developed, I observed the changing shadows, changing light, and sometimes the changing color of the shadows throughout the day.
I also found that many of the pictures could be viewed in different directions, just as skylights can, so although the hanging wires go in one direction, it is easy to add a second and re-think it. Are we looking up? Down? Through? It is for you to decide.
While the skylights continue to engage me, I have recently started a series based on mycelium, the fungus among us that grows beneath the earth’s surface and is a sort of universal connector.
